La Fuente de Salmácide

Desde un denso bosque de altos y oscuros pinos,
Como una isla se alza el monte Ida.
En una cueva oculta, las ninfas cuidan un niño;
Hermafrodito, hijo de los dioses,
…temeroso de su amor.]

Mientras el alba repta hacia el cielo
El cazador divisa una liebre.
En su deseo de hacerla presa,
Llegó a un pantano
…que jamás había vislumbrado]

Hermafrodito: “¿Dónde estás padre?
…Da sabiduría a tu hijo”]
Narrador: “Y entonces no pudo seguir adelante.
…Perdido, el muchacho es guiado por el sol”]

Y conforme sus fuerzas empezaban a flaquear
Vislumbró un lago trémulo.
Una sombra en las profundidades verdosas
Perturbaba la extraña quietud.

Salmácide: “Las aguas se agitan
…Alguna criatura ha sido conmovida”]
Narrador: “Las aguas se agitan
…Salmácide, reina de las náyades ha sido…
…conmovida”]

Tan pronto como se abalanzó a sofocar su sed,
Una fuente surgió delante suya
Y mientras su tibio aliento
…se esparcía en la fresca neblina,]
Una voz acuosa dijo “Hijo de los dioses,
…bebe de mi manantial”.]

El agua tenía un gusto curiosamente dulce.
Detrás de él la voz hablo de nuevo.
Se giró y la vio, vestida con un manto de bruma sólo
Y mientras la contemplaba, sus ojos se llenaron
…con la obscuridad del lago.]

Salmácide: “Debemos ser uno.
…Debemos unirnos como un solo ser”]
Narrador: “Ella quería que fuesen uno.
…Aunque el no deseaba tal unión”]
Hermafrodito: “Alejate de mi
…mujer de sangre fría. Tu sed no es la mía”]
Salmácide: “Nada nos separará jamás
…Escuchadme Oh dioses”]

Una quietud sobrenatural descendió desde los cielos
Y entonces su carne y sus huesos
…fueron extrañamente fundidos]
Para siempre estar unidos como un único ser.

La criatura se arrastró dentro del lago
Una voz que se desvanecía se oyo:
“Y ruego, que todo aquel que toque este manantial
…comparta mi destino”]
Salmácide: “Somos uno, somos uno solo”]
Narrador: “Los dos son ahora uno.
…Semidios y ninfa son ahora uno.”]

Ambos dieron todo lo que tenían.
El sueño de un amante se ha cumplido por fin,
Para siempre permanecer bajo el lago.

The Fountain Of Salmacis

From a dense forest of tall, dark, pinewood,
Mount Ida rises like an island.
Within a hidden cave, nymphs had kept a child;
Hermaphroditus, son of gods,
…so afraid of their love.]

As the dawn creeps up the sky
The hunter caught sight of a doe.
In desire for conquest,
He found himself, within a glade
…he'd not beheld before.]

Hermaphroditus: “Where are you my father.
…Give wisdom to your son.”]
Narrator: “Then he could go no farther.
…Now lost, the boy was guided by the sun”]

And as his strength began to fail
He saw a shimmering lake.
A shadow in the dark green depths
Disturbed the strange tranquility.

Salmacis: “The waters are disturbed
…Some creature has been stirred”]
Narrator: “The waters are disturbed
…The naiad queen Salmacis has been…
…stirred”]

As he rushed to quench his thirst,
A fountain spring appeared before him
And as his heated breath
…brushed through the cool mist,]
A liquid voice called “Son of gods,
…drink from my spring”.]

The water tasted strangely sweet.
Behind him the voice called again.
He turned and saw her, in a cloak of mist alone
And as he gazed, her eyes were filled
…with the darkness of the lake.]

Salmacis: “We shall be one.
…We shall be joined as one”]
Narrator: “She wanted them as one.
…Yet he had no desire to be one”]
Hermaphroditus: “Away from me
…cold-blooded woman. Your thirst is not mine”]
Salmacis: “Nothing will cause us to part
…Hear me O gods”]

Unearthly calm descended from the sky
And then their flesh and bones
…were strangely merged]
Forever to be joined as one.

The creature crawled into the lake
A fading voice was heard:
“And I beg, that all who touch this spring
…may share my fate”]
Salmacis: “We are the one, we are the one”]
Narrator: “The two are now made one.
…Demi-god and nymph are now made one”]

Both had given everything they had.
A lover's dream had been fulfilled at last,
Forever still beneath the lake.
